This short course covers the Avid Pro Tools ‘User’ Level Curriculum content for 101 and 100 qualifications. It will introduce you to the software and hardware concepts and teach you how to use media production editing techniques and strategies for balancing and finalising sound for Media.

Avid Certification is recognised worldwide and helps professionals attain and demonstrate the skills and credentials they need to increase their value, competency and efficiency in the highly competitive media industry.

This course will include the following general topics at an Avid Pro Tools Fundamental Level:

  1. Background: The History of Pro Tools and principles of Digital Audio
  2. Pro Tools hardware and software concepts
  3. Pro Tools Editing processes

On this module students will learn the fundamental knowledge concerning computer security, basic cyber threats and the corresponding detection and defence techniques.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to cyberspace and cyber security: computer security, web security, operating system security, wireless/network security, mobile security, programming security.
  • Concepts and terminology of cyber security: basics of encryption and cryptography, virtual platform, cloud, protocols, hacking, malware, virus, botnets, pentest, information security practice/standards.
  • Basic coverage of security software: anti-virus software, packet sniffers, anti-spyware, intrusion detection/protection software, digital forensics software, pentest software.
  • Introductory overview of network security: types of networks, network protocols, network security and protection, VPNs, firewall configuration/maintenance, network intrusion and detection systems.
  • The human factor in security: authorisation mechanisms, usability issues, risk analysis and control, cyber-ethics, cyber bullying, social media attacks.

This short course aims to fulfil the requirements to provide students with the IT skills needed in both graduate work and in future employment. It equips students with the skills needed to build confidence and improve their IT abilities effectively using MS Office.

This course is for anyone who:

  • Is looking to build their IT skills either personally or professionally
  • Is a current student who is struggling with IT skills
  • Is starting University in September

What you will study

  • ICT Fundamentals & File Management (MS Windows) – helps the student in basic computer housekeeping skills, and provides an essential understanding of how to use a computer in a safe and secure manner.
  • Word Processing (MS Word) – helps the student to use a range of basic word processing tools to produce appropriate, straightforward and routine documents.
  • Presentations (MS PowerPoint) – provide the skills to use a range of basic presentation tools.  Students will be able to create appropriate presentations, and slide shows.
  • Spreadsheets (MS Excel) – enables students to use a range of basic spreadsheet tools to produce appropriate spreadsheets.
  • Internet/Communication – helps the student to understand how to use the Internet and email in a safe and secure way.

Description

This course combines the technical aspects of drawing with theoretical aspects of Fine Art practice.

In this way, students will learn both how to achieve technical accuracy whilst developing an understanding that drawing is not entirely defined by the boundaries of mimicry. A variety of media will be tested alongside occasional collaborative exercises to encourage a group dynamic. Students will also be required to maintain their progression outside of the classes and share their work in the proceeding session.

Periodically across the course, students will be introduced to a different technical principle of drawing and learn to apply this within their still life drawing each week.

A Fine Art theory will also be included to allow for both technique and theory to develop in unison.

There will be a time of discussion at the beginning to allow for group bonding and sharing of the previous weeks’ homework. This will be followed by practical exercises and more detailed skill sessions in theory.

Students will be introduced to the following:

  • A range of technical principles including perspective, composition, tone and form.
  • A variety of mediums and their appropriate application.
  • Critical analysis of their work and others to inform their practice.

This fee covers 6 weeks attendance and tutorage, including assessment and basic materials. Additional cost may be incurred if participants choose to work with non-standard materials or at high volume or large format.

This 9-week short course will run on Monday evenings from 6pm-8pm in the following blocks across the year:

This course is ideal for you if you’re interested in learning the basic concepts of graphic design including the use of colours and typography. It will also introduce you to the relevant Adobe software packages to help you produce your own graphic design pieces such as adverts, logos or posters.

  • Concept sketching and layout skills – sketching practice, text blocking
  • Typography – introduction to Illustrator

  • Advertising and poster design introduction - Introduction to InDesign

This course will be delivered on-campus in class, using Adobe software.

This course will run for 9 weeks. Classes will take place every Tuesday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m in our School of Creative Arts 49-51 Regent Street.

This course takes oil painting back to the very basics. Focusing in the early weeks on the fundamental skills of painting such as mixing colours, surfaces, brush choice etc.

As the weeks progress students will be introduced to the theoretical aspects of Fine Art practice and to image making with exercises designed to slowly increase students confidence in the media.

Collaborative practice will also be encouraged to promote a group dynamic as well as weekly homework tasks that will be discussed in the ‘discussion’ section at the beginning of the class.

Periodically across the course, students will be introduced to a different technical principle of oil painting and learn to apply this within their still life painting each week.

A Fine Art theory will also be included to allow for both technique and theory to develop in unison. There will be a time of discussion at the beginning to allow for group bonding and sharing of the previous weeks homework. This will be followed by practical exercises and more detailed skill sessions in theory.

Students will be introduced to the following:

  • A range of technical painting principles including but not limited to colour mixing, surfaces, application and brush technique.
  • How to manipulate the medium in a manner appropriate to the subject.
  • Critical analysis of their work and others to inform their practice.

This fee covers 8 weeks attendance and tutorage, including assessment and basic materials.  Additional cost may be incurred if participants choose to work with non-standard materials or at high volume or large format.

This 8-week short course will run on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 9pm in the following blocks across the year:
